PCAMRD picks 2004 Elvira O. Tan Memorial Awardees The Philippine Council for Aquatic and Marine Research and Development conferred the prestigious Elvira O. Tan Memorial Awards to researchers of the Southeast Asian Fisheries Development Center-Aquaculture Department (SEAFDEC-AQD) in Tigbauan, Iloilo and Tohuku University in Japan during the closing ceremony of the 2004 National Science and Technology Week celebration in Casablanca Hotel, Legazpi City, Albay, July 25. The research team's paper bested 13 others in the aquaculture category. It is entitled “Genetic diversity in farmed Asian Nile and red hybrid tilapia stocks evaluated from microsatellite and mitochondrial DNA analysis” authored by Dr. Maria Rowena R. Romana-Eguia, Dr. Minoru Ikeda, Dr. Zubaida U. Basiao, and Dr. Nobuhiko Taniguchi. The “Best Published Paper in Marine Fisheries” award went to Dr. Jurgenne H. Primavera of SEAFDEC-AQD for the paper “Integrated mangove aquaculture systems in Asia”. Dr. Primavera's outstanding research was picked over 11 other nominees in the marine fisheries category. The Elvira O. Tan Memorial Award provides incentives to fisheries researchers who had published research results or outputs in refereed journals within the last five years. Winning papers are selected based on impact to the fisheries industry (economics/social), number of fishfarmer and technology beneficiaries, and contribution to fisheries science. Each winner receives cash award of P10,000 and a plaque of recognition. The board of judges was composed of Dr. Herminio Rabanal from private sector, Dr. Lourdes Castillo, zonal center coordinator of Southern Luzon Zonal Center for Aquatic and Marine Research and Development; and Felix Gonzales of the Chamber of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources.
