tsunami warning system project gets Finn aid
The
The system will be composed of tsunami detection or wet
sensors that will be located on islands near potential tsunami zones linked
through a reliable communication system to information receiving center at the
Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology’s main office in Quezon City.
PHIVOLCS Director Renato Solidum, Jr. signed the MOA with Finn Ambassador to Manila Riitta Resch on the project
called “Establishment of a Local Tsunami Warning System for Manila Bay and
Vicinity” at the Embassy of Finland in Makati last
July 19.
The recent tsunami disaster that swept several countries in
the
High risk coastal communities facing the Manila Trench
particularly coastal towns of Metro Manila are currently outside the coverage
of the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (PTWC) and the Northwest Pacific Tsunami
Warning Center (NWPTIC).
The P 2.2 million project will
enable PHIVOLCS to give out a tsunami warning to authorities and community
leaders so they could implement emergency procedures like evacuation of the
population.
After the system is installed and tested for reliability,
PHIVOLCS will hold a stakeholders training seminar to train them on proper
responses during emergencies. Tsunami hazard maps indicating the shortest
possible routes to safe grounds safe will also be provided to local
officials. The maps will be the basis in formulating tsunami evacuation plans.
