Metro Manila public schools held simultaneous earthquake drillOver 600 public schools in Metro Manila went on simultaneous earthquake safety drill last July 28 at 10AM. The massive drill was part of the National Disaster Consciousness Month celebration led by the Office of Civil Defense—National Capital Region with technical assistance from the Department of Science and Technology’s Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology. The opening program, observation, and evaluation of the drill were held at Fort Bonifacio High School in Makati City. The activity was also part of OCD’s “Safe Ka Ba?” program that aims to emphasize basic preparedness steps during calamities like earthquakes. Around 4,000 FBHS students participated in the drill along with millions in Metro Manila and many public schools in other regions of the country. Drill evaluators from PHIVOLCS and OCD were stationed in different buildings of FBHS to monitor and evaluate the over-all drill handling. Principals and school representatives from 646 public elementary and secondary schools in Metro Manila gathered in a seminar on how to conduct earthquake drill in schools at P. Bernardo Elementary School in Quezon City last May 26-27. PHIVOLCS’ technical staff trained the participants on actual drill after the lectures and workshops. Among the guests during the opening program were Department of National Defense Secretary Avelino Cruz, Jr., Department of Education Assistant Secretaries Lilia Roces and Camilo Miguel Montesa, Department of Social Welfare and Development Undersecretary Celia Yangco, PHIVOLCS Director and drill annotator Renato Solidum, Jr., Gen. Glenn Rabonza (Ret.) of NDCC Operations Office, Acting OCD Administrator Anthony Roland Golez, Jr., OCD-NCR Director Franklin Castillo, Tina Monzon-Palma of Bantay Bata Foundation, Atty. Gilda Lim of Rotary Club of Makati-Dasmariñas, and media representatives.
