DOST-IX microlab receives ISO 17025 accreditationThe Department of Science and Technology—Region IX’s Regional Standards and Testing Center—Microbiological Laboratory received its ISO 17025 accreditation last February 17, which made it one of the first three DOST regional laboratories next to those of DOST-X (Cagayan de Oro City) and DOST-VII (Cebu City).to achieve international laboratory standards. ISO17025 or the General Requirements for the Competence of Testing and Calibration Laboratories applies to laboratories that meet specific standards in precision, accuracy, and repeatability of results. The growth in use of quality systems generally has increased the need to ensure that laboratories operate on a quality system compliant with ISO 9000 as well as with ISO 17025. Testing and calibration laboratories that comply with ISO 17025 will also operate in accordance with ISO 9000. ISO 9000 certification alone does not demonstrate the competence of a laboratory to produce technically valid data and results, whereas certification to ISO 17025 provides that evidence. The ISO 17025 accreditation is valid for three years, with surveillance audit to be conducted annually to ensure compliance with the standards set. Jovita A. Amparo, the microbiology laboratory in-charge of DOST-IX, was granted the signatory status for the following:
